Art Deco Chess Table and Chairs

Size:
Table: 24″ square by 34″ high
Materials:
Mahogany, Bird’s Eye Maple, Amboyna Burl, Ebony, and Mother of Pearl
Description:
This is the third version of my original Art Deco inspired Chess Tablethis one in Mahogany and Holly with a playing surface of Amboyna Burl and Bird’s Eye Maple.  There is one divided drawer for chess piece storage in Mahogany lined with dark brown velvet and a slide out tray below for placing captured pieces during the game.  The tray is decorated with a marquetry image of two knights about to do battle.

The proportions of this table are slightly different than the previous versions as the playing surface is larger but the delicate proportions and refinement of the table design remain.  These features are present in the original table design as well but the look is quite different  in a more subtle wood like Mahogany and with less inlay when compared to the more dramatic Macassar Ebony of the first table.

I wrote two articles for Fine Woodworking magazine about the original Chess Table.  The first article detailed my procedure for veneering the cove shaped sides of the main box and the second covered how to create a veneered chessboard both articles will be featured in expanded form in my new book The Craft of Veneering due out in October 2018.
